Three individuals, Gurkirat Singh from Barian Kalan, and Babanpreet and Sahilpreet Singh from Mohali, have been arrested for vandalizing a statue of B.R. Ambedkar in Noorpur Jattan village, Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, India. Police allege that the youths acted under the direction of the separatist organization Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik stated that Gurkirat Singh, the main conspirator, had illegally migrated to the United States in 2023, where he connected with SFJ members. Despite being deported in 2025, he continued to communicate with the group and orchestrated the vandalism with the help of the other two suspects. The statue, which had previously been vandalized last year, was encased in glass to protect it. However, the latest attack involved smashing the glass and damaging the statue with hammers. SFJ leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannu claimed responsibility for the vandalism in a video, framing it as a “referendum on Ambedkar” and criticizing the Constitution drafted by him for allegedly erasing Sikh identity.
