In light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for fuel conservation amid rising global crude prices, the Maharashtra government, led by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has introduced several austerity measures. These include reducing the size of ministerial convoys and encouraging the use of the Mumbai Metro for commutes. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule stated that ministers will refrain from summoning district collectors to Mumbai for routine work, opting instead for online meetings. Following PM Modi's decision to cut his convoy by 50%, Maharashtra plans to implement similar reductions for its Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Ministers, contingent on security assessments. Additionally, foreign tours for ministers will be restricted, with exceptions only for medical emergencies. BJP state president Ravindra Chavan has urged party members to embrace digital communication to minimize travel. High-ranking officials have begun using the Metro, with some, like BJP vice president Keshav Upadhye, noting the convenience of the change. These measures, while temporary, are designed to reduce unnecessary fuel expenses and set a precedent for public cooperation.
