In a move aimed at enhancing transparency, Indian ports are now publicly listing stranded cargo that qualifies for concessions on their websites. Mukesh Mangal, Additional Secretary at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, announced this initiative during an inter-ministerial briefing. He emphasized that while central guidelines cannot be uniformly applied to all ports, advisories have been issued to address exporters' concerns. Notably, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port has already provided concessions totaling approximately ₹22 crore (around $2.65 million USD) since the onset of the Iran crisis. Mangal mentioned that one port has extended its concessions through April 2026. He also highlighted that the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) has instructed ports to ensure immediate concessions for exporters with Gulf-bound cargo, aiming to eliminate procedural delays. Additionally, the DG Shipping has raised concerns regarding increased war-risk insurance premiums and has called for shipping lines to reflect these changes transparently in freight charges. Port authorities are tasked with ensuring compliance at the terminal level to guarantee that these concessions benefit exporters without delay.
