The Maharashtra state transport department has officially extended the deadline for the mandatory installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, to June 30, 2023. This decision comes as only about 50% of eligible vehicles had complied with the previous deadline of December 31, 2022. From July 1, 2023, enforcement squads will take strict action against vehicles lacking HSRPs. However, vehicle owners who book appointments for installation before the deadline will be exempt from punitive measures, even if the actual installation occurs later.
The department has already limited several Regional Transport Office (RTO) services for non-compliant vehicles, including ownership transfers and permit renewals, while fitness certificate renewals remain exempt for now. The Nagpur region has shown relatively high compliance, with thousands of HSRP orders placed and a significant number of installations completed. To further boost compliance, the transport department is intensifying awareness campaigns through local media and collaboration with transport unions. A grievance redressal contact has also been established for citizens facing issues with HSRP installation.

The extension of the HSRP deadline allows vehicle owners additional time to comply, but failure to do so will result in restrictions on RTO services.
