Uttar Pradesh's state transformation commission (STC) is introducing a WhatsApp-based maternal care program aimed at reducing maternal mortality rates. The program will allow families to register pregnancies and track healthcare appointments through an app. This initiative addresses critical challenges in maternal healthcare, including timely medical check-ups and ensuring deliveries occur in facilities equipped to handle complications. Currently, Uttar Pradesh has a maternal mortality rate (MMR) of 141 per lakh live births, significantly higher than the target of below 40 per lakh live births set by states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The app will generate check-up dates and recommend healthcare facilities based on the woman's medical condition. With around 60% of deliveries occurring at community health centers and a significant number of maternal deaths attributed to hemorrhage, this program aims to improve outcomes for mothers and babies alike.
