A tragic fire engulfed the Maupiya Sewana Elders Home in Batagoda, Sri Lanka, on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals, including a 17-year-old boy, and injuring six others. The facility, located south of Colombo, housed 71 residents, comprising both elderly people and young individuals with mental health challenges. Following the incident, the care home's manager was arrested as authorities began an investigation into the cause of the fire. Police spokesperson Fredrick Wootler confirmed that 51 residents and staff members were successfully rescued and relocated to a nearby government facility. Forensic teams have been called in to assist with the investigation. Additionally, a magistrate's inquiry was conducted on Thursday morning, with Horana Magistrate Lakmini Vidanagamage visiting the site to assess the situation. The community is mourning the loss of life and grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event.
