The Mid-Continent Library (MCPL) system in the Kansas City area is launching a 'Food for Fines' initiative from May 4 to May 10, 2023. This program allows patrons to reduce their overdue fines by donating food items, with each item counting as $1.50 off fines or replacement card charges, up to a total of $30. Donations can be made at any MCPL location, including libraries in Lee’s Summit, Gladstone, Buckner, Blue Springs, and Independence. MCPL encourages donations of nutritious items such as boxed meals, canned soup, canned meat, fruit, vegetables, peanut butter, cereal, and pasta. However, the library requests that donors avoid giving open packages, damaged items, expired products, and nonnutritious items.
