The Tambaram bus terminus in Chennai, a major transit hub, has been flagged as unsafe after 6pm due to inadequate lighting and rampant encroachments. Commuters, particularly women, have reported feeling threatened by anti-social elements loitering in the area. R Kavitha, a local worker, recounted a troubling experience where she was followed and approached for her phone while waiting for a bus. The situation is exacerbated by unauthorized vendors and temporary stalls, which congest the terminus and hinder bus operations. Currently, over 10,000 commuters utilize the terminus daily, with more than 500 buses servicing various routes. In response to these concerns, the Tambaram corporation has earmarked ₹7 crore (approximately $840,000 USD) for renovations aimed at enhancing safety and facilities. Planned improvements include installing better lighting, CCTV cameras, and a new roof, along with stricter regulations on vendor operations. Tambaram corporation commissioner S Balachander confirmed that work is expected to commence soon, aiming for completion before the monsoon season.
