The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Chennai has secured a significant conviction in an international drug smuggling case, sentencing six men to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The Pudukottai NDPS court's decision follows an operation by the Indian Coast Guard on November 21, 2022, which intercepted a fishing vessel, Kanmani, approximately 45 nautical miles south of Mandapam, Tamil Nadu. During the operation, the crew attempted to dispose of eight gunny bags containing narcotics, which were later recovered by the Coast Guard. The total seizure included 290.49 kg of ganja and 1 kg of hashish oil, valued at around ₹1.52 crore (approximately $183,000 USD). The six convicted individuals, including four Indian nationals and the vessel's owner, were found guilty of operating a trafficking network that transported drugs to Sri Lanka. NCB officials have urged the public to report any drug-related activities through the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline, ensuring confidentiality for informants.
