This initiative follows a tragic terror attack in April 2022 that claimed the lives of 25 tourists and a local pony-ride operator, significantly impacting tourist confidence. The new system allows easy verification of registered service providers, including pony-ride operators and vendors, who have undergone police vetting before receiving a unique QR code containing their personal details. Tourists can scan these codes with their mobile phones to access comprehensive information about the service providers, including their name, address, and police verification status. Officials believe this reliable identification process will curb fraud and prevent unauthorized individuals from posing as legitimate service providers. The initiative has been positively received by tourism stakeholders, who assert that it will help restore visitor trust and improve the overall security environment in Pahalgam.
