Cohere, a Canadian artificial intelligence lab, announced plans to acquire Aleph Alpha, a German AI company, to facilitate its expansion into Europe. The acquisition is supported by a $600 million investment from Schwarz Group, a significant backer of Aleph Alpha, as part of Cohere's upcoming Series E funding round, expected to close in 2026. While the acquisition awaits regulatory approval, the financial details have not been disclosed. Founded in 2019, Cohere has raised $1.6 billion from investors such as Nvidia and AMD, achieving a valuation of $7 billion in 2025. Aidan Gomez, Cohere's cofounder and CEO, emphasized that this partnership will enhance their ability to deliver sovereign AI solutions to various sectors, including finance, healthcare, and defense. Aleph Alpha's established relationships within the German public sector, including contracts with the ministry for digital affairs and the Baden-Württemberg regional government, make it an attractive acquisition for Cohere as it seeks to solidify its presence in Europe's largest economy.
