West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed claims made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding women's reservation during a BJP rally. Modi alleged that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) blocked a bill for a 33% quota for women in Parliament and state assemblies. In her response, Banerjee asserted that the TMC has the highest representation of women among elected members, with 37.9% of its Lok Sabha members being women and 46% in the Rajya Sabha. She emphasized that the TMC does not oppose women's reservation but is against the government's proposed delimitation exercise, which she believes is a tactic to manipulate electoral boundaries for political gain. Banerjee pointed out that the women's reservation bill was passed in September 2023 and criticized Modi for misleading the public instead of engaging in honest dialogue. She further stated that the implementation of the reservation is contingent upon completing a fresh census and a delimitation exercise, which could delay its execution until 2034. Banerjee challenged Modi to address the nation in Parliament, where he would be subject to scrutiny and accountability.
