In Ukraine, a temporary ceasefire from May 9 to 11 was marred by accusations of violations from both sides, resulting in drone attacks on civilian infrastructure. Research indicates that ceasefires with longer-term commitments—such as demobilization and international monitoring—are more effective in reducing violence. However, both the Iran and Ukraine ceasefires lacked robust compliance mechanisms and did not involve significant third-party enforcement. The complexities of modern conflicts, including the involvement of multiple armed groups and the political connections between conflicts, further complicate ceasefire negotiations. The current pattern of short-term ceasefires is likely to persist unless the costs of ongoing conflict become unbearable for the involved parties. For civilians affected by these conflicts, a resolution is urgently needed.
