The Indian Railways is facing significant financial strain following a Supreme Court ruling that cancels its 'Deemed Licensee' status, which previously allowed it to procure electricity without surcharges. This decision is expected to increase traction energy costs by over 30%, exacerbating an already challenging financial landscape. In April, the Railways reported a 1% decline in freight loading and a 5% drop in freight earnings compared to the previous year. The Railway Board has noted a sharp rise in ordinary working expenses (OWE), which increased by 11.6%, alongside a 9.1% rise in pension expenditure. With freight earnings constituting over 65% of total revenue, the decline in this sector poses a serious threat to the Railways' financial stability, especially as its operating ratio remains above 98%. The projected total revenue for FY27 is ₹3.02 lakh crore, with freight earnings expected at ₹1.89 lakh crore, highlighting the critical need for a robust freight sector to ensure financial viability.
