The Zoji La Tunnel Project, a pivotal infrastructure initiative in India, has reached a significant milestone with its final breakthrough, marking the completion of the 13.153-km tunnel. Located between Baltal and Meenamarg in the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, this tunnel is recognized as the longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at the highest altitude globally, situated at approximately 11,578 feet above sea level. This project, executed by Megha Engineering Infrastructure Limited, aims to ensure all-weather connectivity across a challenging Himalayan corridor that is often cut off due to heavy snowfall and avalanches. The tunnel's construction employs the New Austrian Tunnelling Method to address the region's fragile geology. Once completed by mid-2027, it will significantly improve access to Drass, Kargil, and Leh, bolstering economic activity and tourism while enhancing logistical support for India's defense forces along the India-China border. The project has also provided substantial support for the annual Amarnath Yatra, showcasing its broader community engagement.
