The electric vehicle (EV) market in the UK is experiencing significant growth, with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reporting that over 80% of new car models are either zero-emission or hybrid. Currently, there are 167 electric models available from 51 manufacturers, a dramatic increase from just 14 models in 2016. So far this year, 562,000 new electric vehicles have been registered, representing 26.8% of the new car market, and bringing the total number of EVs on UK roads to approximately two million. However, consumer sentiment remains a challenge; a survey revealed that 54% of respondents are not inclined to switch to electric vehicles. SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes noted that while investment from manufacturers has driven progress, ongoing government support is crucial to sustain demand. Concerns have also been raised by dealerships about the effectiveness of the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Mandate, which requires manufacturers to produce electric models despite lower-than-expected consumer demand. Peter Smyth, Director at Swansway Motor Group, highlighted that currently, dealerships sell only one electric vehicle for every four petrol or diesel cars, indicating a need for more consumer acceptance.
