The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is moving to prohibit Chinese laboratories from certifying electronics intended for the US market. Currently, approximately 75% of electronics testing occurs in China, and this new proposal aims to enhance national security. FCC Chair Brendan Carr indicated that the commission is also considering limiting interconnection capabilities for entities deemed security threats. The FCC's decision could significantly impact major Chinese companies like China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, which may face bans from running data centers in the US. This follows earlier initiatives to tighten restrictions on Chinese technology, including a ban on importing new models of Chinese drones. Testing electronics in US laboratories is expected to be more expensive, which may lead to higher prices for consumers as companies adjust to the increased costs.
