India is accelerating its negotiations for a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) with Canada, as announced by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal during the World Intellectual Property Day celebrations in New Delhi. Goyal stated that while talks with Canada are progressing, negotiations with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) — which includes Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain — have been paused due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The FTA negotiations with the GCC began in February but have faced setbacks. Goyal is scheduled to visit Canada next month to expedite discussions on the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the terms of which were finalized last month.
