A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck offshore near Sarangani province in the southern Philippines on Monday, leading to a rising death toll of at least 32 fatalities and over 200 injuries. The earthquake's epicenter was located approximately 20 kilometers from Sarangani, prompting tsunami alerts across the southern Philippines, northern Indonesia, and Malaysia's Saba state. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported that the tsunami threat had significantly diminished about five hours after the quake. In General Santos, the hardest-hit area, at least seven people were confirmed dead, and 130 others were injured as buildings collapsed and structures sustained severe damage. Rod Sosmeña, the regional director of the Office of Civil Defence, noted that authorities are currently assessing reports of students trapped in a two-story school that collapsed. Additionally, fatalities were reported in South Cotabato, Davao Occidental, and Balut Island, primarily due to falling debris and landslides. The situation remains critical as rescue efforts continue and authorities seek to account for missing individuals.
