In response to the deaths of eight lion cubs suspected to have contracted Babesia infection in Gujarat's Gir landscape, forest authorities in Bhavnagar district have implemented a series of health monitoring measures for the local Asiatic lion population. Deputy Conservator of Forests, Yogesh Desai, confirmed that no symptoms of the tick-borne disease have been found among the lions in the area. During a recent patrol, about 50 lions were observed and deemed healthy, with 19 already undergoing deworming and de-ticking treatments. The remaining lions are scheduled for similar preventive measures within the next ten days. Authorities are intensifying daily patrols to monitor the lions' movements and health, ensuring any abnormalities are reported for immediate veterinary attention. State Forest Minister Arjun Modhwadia has stated that lions within a 10-km radius of the affected areas have been isolated as a precaution, and no new suspected cases have been reported recently. The Asiatic lion population in Gujarat currently stands at 891, occupying nearly 35,000 sq. km across various districts.
