A special court in Bengaluru has sentenced Vinay Kulkarni, a senior Congress MLA from Dharwad, Karnataka, to life imprisonment for his role in the murder of Yogeshgouda Goudar, a 26-year-old BJP zilla panchayat member. The court found Kulkarni and 16 co-accused guilty of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and criminal conspiracy under section 120B. The incident occurred on June 15, 2016, when Goudar was attacked at his gym. Following initial investigations by local police, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in 2019 due to allegations that Kulkarni orchestrated the murder to eliminate a political rival. The prosecution sought life imprisonment to send a strong message, while Kulkarni's defense requested leniency citing family responsibilities. The judge ultimately sided with the prosecution, leading to Kulkarni's disqualification as an MLA under the Representation of People’s Act, 1951.
