Italian authorities have executed a significant operation against the Sicilian Mafia, seizing assets valued at over 200 million euros (approximately $232 million) linked to the late mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro's drug trafficking activities. The confiscated items include more than 12 kilograms (26 pounds) of gold bars, millions in cash, luxury watches, and around 20 high-end properties. This crackdown follows Denaro's death in a prison hospital, nine months after his January 2023 arrest, which ended his three-decade evasion of law enforcement. Denaro was previously convicted of numerous murders, including orchestrating the 1992 bombings that killed prominent anti-Mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. The operation, which involved over 150 Italian financial police officers, included searches both domestically and internationally in locations such as Andorra, Gibraltar, and Switzerland. The national anti-mafia prosecutor, Giovanni Melillo, emphasized that these seizures are part of a larger initiative to dismantle the financial infrastructure of the Sicilian Mafia, aiming to thwart its ability to re-establish criminal networks with global influence.
