In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India, an excavation mishap caused significant disruption to the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) supply for nearly 40 hours. The incident occurred when a telecom company, Bharti Airtel, was laying communication lines and damaged a PNG pipeline, affecting areas such as Ashiana, Bangla Bazar, and Kanpur Road. Bharti Airtel's spokesperson, Srinivasan Udandrao, stated that they had coordinated with Green Gas Limited (GGL) prior to the work, informing them through email and having a patrolling team on-site. However, contractor Ambuj Tripathi of Balaji Enterprises claimed that despite following GGL's instructions and using underground scanning equipment, the pipeline was still struck. GGL's deputy general manager, Praveen Kumar, indicated that PNG pipelines are typically laid at depths of 1.5 to 2 metres but can exceed 3 metres in areas with multiple utilities. The situation has raised questions about the effectiveness of coordination between utility agencies and contractors, particularly regarding the mapping of underground utilities. GGL is currently investigating the incident and will take appropriate action based on their findings. Residents expressed frustration over the disruption, as many were left without cooking gas for almost two days.
