Bangladesh's Foreign Ministry has lodged a formal protest with India's acting High Commissioner, Pawan Badhe, regarding comments made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In a recent social media post, Sarma claimed that 20 illegal Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended and expelled from Assam, stating, 'Rude people don't understand soft language.' Bangladesh's Director General for South Asia, Ishrat Jahan, conveyed that such comments are disparaging and undermine the spirit of friendly relations between the two countries. Indian officials responded by stating that Sarma's views do not represent the Indian government's position. The Indian government is actively working to stabilize relations with the new government in Bangladesh, led by BNP chief and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, and has appointed Dinesh Trivedi as India's High Commissioner to Bangladesh to strengthen ties.
