A Hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship has resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including a Dutch couple and a German national. Public health officials are actively tracing those who came into contact with the victims to mitigate further spread. The cruise, which included passengers from at least 12 different countries, is currently en route to the Canary Islands for disembarkation. Amid this outbreak, a 2022 social media post predicting the emergence of Hantavirus has gained traction, drawing comparisons to the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Hantaviruses, typically spread through contaminated rodent droppings, are not easily transmitted between humans, but the Andes virus may have rare instances of human-to-human transmission. Health officials are exercising caution but do not currently foresee a widespread epidemic.
