On April 18, 2023, the Karnataka High Court in Bengaluru rejected a review petition from the state government concerning the grading system for third language subjects in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination. The court insisted that the valuation must adhere to existing rules, which stipulate awarding marks rather than grades. This decision came after concerns were raised about the new evaluation system, which was introduced post-examination without proper notification. Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty argued that the government aimed to alleviate pressure on students, especially since many had failed in Hindi, their third language. However, the court pointed out that 83% of students had passed the exam and questioned the rationale behind conducting the examination if the goal was universal success. The court's directive mandates that evaluations for the SSLC examination align with the rules set for the 2025-26 academic year, following a petition from students who were affected by the government's announcement made prior to their exams.
