The Oura Smart Ring has expanded its functionality to detect obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and facilitate access to medical care. OSA is a prevalent and serious condition affecting approximately 936 million adults worldwide, leading to various health complications, including cardiovascular issues and cognitive dysfunction. The Oura Ring measures respiration rate and oxygen saturation, allowing it to flag potential symptoms of OSA in its app. In collaboration with health tech company Resmed, Oura now offers users three options for addressing sleep concerns: educational resources, the ability to connect with healthcare providers virtually or in-person, and guides for discussing sleep health with doctors. This initiative aims to enhance access to care, as many individuals live with unrecognized sleep issues. Dr. Ricky Bloomfield, Oura's chief medical officer, stated that the integration of Oura’s insights with Resmed’s expertise provides users with better tools to understand their sleep health. Currently, this feature is available only in the United States for users of the third and fourth generation Oura Ring with an active subscription.
