In June 2021, a drone attack on an Indian Air Force station in Jammu marked a significant shift in security threats, with drones becoming a tool for terror groups based in Pakistan. This change has rendered traditional security measures inadequate, as drones are now frequently used to airdrop weapons, conduct surveillance, and guide infiltrating militants along the Line of Control and International Border in Jammu and Kashmir, India. Over the past five years, a Ministry of Home Affairs report noted two to three drone sightings daily, with the situation particularly challenging in Jammu and Kashmir, where drones are used for smuggling narcotics and arms. The introduction of drones has led to a sharp decline in infiltration attempts, dropping from 143 in 2018 to just 34 in 2021. In response, Indian security forces have deployed advanced counter-drone systems, including the SkyStriker Kamikaze drones and indigenous anti-drone technologies like the D-4 system. Despite these measures, some drones continue to penetrate defenses, prompting a shift in tactics and the need for constant vigilance. The evolving nature of warfare has necessitated significant investment in drone training for military personnel, highlighting the importance of technology in modern military operations.
