David J. Halberstam, a distinguished sports broadcaster, passed away at the age of 74 after a year-long battle with brain cancer. His broadcasting career spanned over 50 years, during which he held various roles, including play-by-play announcer for St. John's basketball from 1982 to 1992 and the Miami Heat from 1992 to 1998. Following an on-air incident, Halberstam shifted to sales and management, becoming the general manager of Westwood Sports One in 2002. He later returned to broadcasting as the voice of the Nova Southeastern University Sharks men’s basketball team in 2011. In 2018, he established the Sports Broadcast Journal, which covers the sports broadcasting industry.
