D K Shivakumar, the newly elected leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in Karnataka, met with Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to formally stake his claim to form the next government. Accompanied by outgoing chief minister Siddaramaiah and AICC general secretaries KC Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala, Shivakumar is set to be sworn in as chief minister on June 3 at Lok Bhavan. During the meeting, the Congress Legislative Party unanimously acknowledged Siddaramaiah's contributions over the past five years, with Shivakumar moving a resolution to congratulate him. Siddaramaiah voluntarily resigned on May 28 at the suggestion of the party high command, leading to the dissolution of the Council of Ministers. He has been asked to continue in his role until a new government is established. The Congress party is now focusing on a smooth transition of power and aims to regain control in Karnataka by 2028 under Shivakumar's leadership.
