The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS) in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India, hosted a two-day workshop titled “Heritage of Ancient Writing Traditions in the Western Himalaya—Conservation of Scripts and Manuscripts of Himachal Pradesh.” The event aimed to promote the study and preservation of ancient manuscripts, such as Pabuchi and Tankri, which are derived from the Sharada script. These manuscripts are crucial for understanding India's knowledge traditions, including texts on the Vedas, Puranas, Jyotisha, and Ayurveda. The workshop featured an exhibition of manuscripts, allowing attendees to appreciate these ancient writing traditions. Keynote speakers, including Prof RC Sinha and Prof Himanshu Kumar Chaturvedi, stressed the importance of conservation, digitization, and coordinated efforts among institutions to preserve these invaluable cultural artifacts. Prof Devdutt Sharma encouraged young researchers to delve into the study of ancient scripts to enhance their understanding of Indian history and culture.
