On Thursday, members of the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU) held a protest at Gandhi Circle in Sindhanur, Raichur district, Karnataka, opposing the new Labour Codes implemented by the Indian government. The protestors burned copies of the notification issued by the Ministry of Labour and Employment on May 8, demanding its immediate withdrawal. AICCTU State joint secretary Nagaraj Pujar criticized the BJP-led Union government for enacting the four Labour Codes—Code on Wages, 2019; Code on Social Security, 2020; Industrial Relations Code, 2020; and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020—without adequate public consultation. Pujar warned that these codes could deprive millions of workers of their rights and weaken existing labour protections. He highlighted concerns that 47% of registered factories would be exempt from safety regulations under the new provisions. The protestors expressed fears that the Labour Codes would reduce minimum wages, weaken social security, and increase the risk of women being forced into night shifts. They described the measures as 'pro-corporate' and a potential pathway to 'modern slavery.' A memorandum outlining their demands was submitted to Labour Minister Santosh Lad through local Labour Department officials, urging the State government to prevent the implementation of the notification in Karnataka and to engage in discussions with trade unions.
