Meta Platforms, Inc.'s decision to ease content moderation has led to a dramatic rise in harassment directed at political figures on Facebook. According to a report from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, abusive comments aimed at U.S. Congress members have tripled since January 2025, following Meta's shift away from fact-checking. The report highlights a quadrupling of violent threats from 1,800 to 7,600 and a similar increase in hateful comments, which surged from 6,900 to 30,000. Harassment incidents also doubled, climbing from 15,700 to 39,900. This escalation in abuse is attributed to Meta's attempt to promote free speech, which has inadvertently fostered a more divisive political environment. With 38% of U.S. adults relying on Facebook for news, the implications of this increased hostility are significant, potentially swaying public opinion and voter behavior. The findings suggest that social media platforms, driven by algorithms favoring emotionally charged content, are exacerbating political division and sectarianism in today's media landscape.
