The Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated a repoll in the Falta assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, following a comprehensive report by special observer Sujeet Mishra. The report, submitted on May 1, identified numerous irregularities, including missing CCTV footage and instances of proxy voting. Despite the returning officer's earlier dismissal of these issues, Mishra's findings revealed significant flaws in the scrutiny process conducted at Diamond Harbour Women’s University. The observer noted that the scrutiny was performed hastily and without proper examination of available video footage. Notably, at polling station 229, no footage was available from the start of voting until 3:41 PM, while other stations experienced similar lapses. The report highlighted that 21% of the 285 polling stations in Falta were compromised, affecting 22.82% of the electorate, or 53,967 out of 236,444 voters. The repoll is set for May 21, with results to be counted on May 24.
