In an effort to strengthen regulation of private school fees, the Maharashtra government has reconstituted the revision committee under the Maharashtra Educational Institutions (Regulation of Fee) Act, 2011. This committee, now chaired by retired Bombay High Court judge MG Gaikwad, serves as the final appellate authority for disputes regarding school fees. The committee can summon records, review decisions made by fee regulatory panels, and issue binding orders, including modifying or overturning fee structures. Additionally, divisional fee regulatory committees (DFRCs) have been set up in major cities, led by retired district judges. Under the Act, schools that have not declared a long-term fee structure may increase fees by up to 15% annually, with revisions allowed every two years. Any increase beyond this limit requires approval from at least 76% of parents. Parents can raise complaints regarding unauthorized fee hikes through the deputy director of education's office, ensuring that schools adhere to established norms.
