The launch of the Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar metro corridor in Pune, Maharashtra, India, is facing further delays primarily due to a labour shortage caused by the West Bengal assembly elections, which has led many workers to return home. Additionally, a shortage of construction materials linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia is exacerbating the situation. Originally expected to commence in March 2022, the project has missed multiple deadlines. The latest target set by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for operations to begin in May 2023 is now unlikely to be met. The revised plan indicates that the first phase of the metro, which will cover 12 stations of the 23-km-long corridor, is now expected to start on June 15, 2026, with the remaining stations operational by October 2026. The project is a public-private partnership between the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL). A senior PMRDA official noted that operations cannot commence without approval from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety, which has not yet been secured. Meanwhile, PMRDA is intensifying monitoring efforts to expedite construction, having identified issues such as a significant water leak affecting progress.
