He argued that the Modi government's claim linking the project to defense and a transshipment port is misleading, suggesting that it primarily serves the interests of businessman Adani, who is expected to profit from the development of hotels and casinos. Gandhi raised concerns about significant environmental destruction, including the loss of over 1.5 crore trees and ancient coral reefs, as well as the displacement of tribal communities. He initiated an online petition called 'we choose green over greed' to encourage public support against the project. Gandhi urged young Indians to consider the implications of prioritizing commercial development over environmental conservation, advocating for the protection of India's natural heritage and the safety of tribal communities. He also suggested that if the government is genuinely concerned about defense in the region, it should focus on expanding the INS Baaz naval base, which has been requested for expansion for five years.
