The Dangote refinery in Lagos, Nigeria, has become vital for the UK’s jet fuel supply as the country faces shortages linked to geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted that the UK is increasing fuel imports from both the US and West Africa, with 130,000 tonnes of jet fuel imported from the Dangote facility in March 2024. Despite accusations from unions that the refinery dismissed workers for joining the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (Pengassan), the company asserts that it respects union rights and has reabsorbed affected workers into different sectors. The UK government is also urging local refineries to maximize production to meet demand as fears grow that planes may be grounded this summer. With the situation in the Gulf affecting fossil fuel supplies, the Dangote refinery is expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing the UK’s jet fuel availability during the peak travel season.
