On Monday, the Bombay High Court granted bail to Surendra Gadling, an activist arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case in 2018. The court, led by Justice A S Gadkari, cited Gadling's lengthy incarceration and the likelihood of the trial not commencing soon as reasons for the bail. With this ruling, all accused individuals in the case, which has been ongoing for over eight years, are now out on bail. The case stems from a conclave held on December 31, 2017, at Shaniwarwada, an 18th-century palace in Pune, Maharashtra, where speeches allegedly incited violence in Koregaon-Bhima the following day. The initial investigation by Pune police suggested Maoist involvement, and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has since taken over the case. Notably, Father Stan Swamy, an 84-year-old priest and tribal rights activist, died in custody in July 2021 while awaiting trial.
