Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer, Anindita Mitra, announced the initiation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, the first of its kind in 22 years, ahead of the assembly elections scheduled for early 2024. The SIR is designed to comprehensively update the electoral rolls by verifying voter details, adding new eligible voters, and removing deceased or duplicate entries. The process will begin following a notification from the Election Commission of India (EC) and will include a preparatory phase followed by a month-long enumeration drive where booth-level officers (BLOs) will visit registered voters' homes. Voters must fill out forms and submit recent photographs to ensure their information is accurate. The last SIR in Punjab took place from 2002 to 2004, making this a significant undertaking. The mapping exercise has already covered over 80% of the 2.14 crore registered voters, with a goal of reaching 90%. The SIR will also ensure that safeguards are in place to prevent wrongful deletions, and NRIs can fill out their forms online. This initiative is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the electoral process in Punjab.
