The Bombay High Court has instructed the Union government of India to make a decision by May 4 regarding the posthumous conferment of the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second-highest civilian award, to Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav, who was India's first individual Olympic medallist. Justices Madhav Jamdar and Pravin Patil issued this directive on April 15 while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) submitted by the Kusteeveer Khashaba Jadhav Foundation, established by Jadhav's son, Ranjeet Jadhav. The foundation's PIL sought to compel the Ministry of Home Affairs to reconsider their previous representations for the award. Khashaba Jadhav, who won a bronze medal in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, passed away in 1984 and was posthumously awarded the Arjuna Award in 2001. The court has scheduled a follow-up hearing for May 5, urging the state government to expedite any necessary actions.
