In a recent development, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu confirmed that the Government Degree College in Kukumseri will not be merged under the state's proposed enrolment-based rationalisation policy. This decision follows advocacy from local MLA Anuradha Rana, who raised concerns about the unique geographical and demographic challenges faced by the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti. Rana met with the Chief Minister to present a memorandum against the merger, highlighting the college's crucial role in providing higher education to students from remote areas, particularly girls and economically weaker sections. The Chief Minister responded positively, instructing officials to take steps to cancel the merger notification. Rana reiterated her commitment to safeguarding educational institutions in the region, emphasizing that applying uniform enrolment norms in such sparsely populated areas could adversely affect access to education.
