The Indian Army has initiated the procurement of 159 bullet-proof troop carriers (BPTCs) to bolster the mobility of Rashtriya Rifles battalions in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. This move is crucial for enhancing the operational capabilities of troops engaged in counter-insurgency operations in difficult terrains. The Army has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to identify Indian vendors who can supply these vehicles, which are expected to deliver a minimum of 60 units per year post-contract. The specifications require the carriers to achieve speeds of 80 to 100 km/h on roads and 50 to 75 km/h off-road, with a range of 350 km in plains and 300 km in mountainous areas. Additionally, the vehicles must operate effectively at altitudes up to 5,000 metres and withstand temperatures from -10°C to 40°C. The BPTCs will also feature limited firing capabilities, supporting the Army's focus on self-reliance through the Make in India initiative.
