Hyderabad police are currently investigating a troubling trend where vehicle registration numbers are being cloned, leading to innocent owners receiving traffic challans for violations they did not commit. In one case, a resident from Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh, reported receiving fines for traffic violations in Jubilee Hills, approximately 500 km from his home. The investigation revealed that V Suresh Kumar, a 26-year-old food aggregator employee, had replaced his scooter's original registration number with a fake one to evade penalties. In another case, a homemaker from Kukatpally, Hyderabad, received multiple fines for violations she did not commit, prompting police to identify Shaik Abbu Baba and his relative Shaik Rihaan as the culprits. Rihaan had altered a letter in his vehicle's registration number to avoid detection. The police have registered cheating cases against the accused and are urging the public to report any suspected misuse of vehicle registration numbers. Authorities emphasize that the use of fake or tampered number plates is a serious offense, and with advanced technologies like CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras, such violations can be effectively monitored.
