During the recent bank holiday weekend, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council issued 2,844 parking fines as visitors flocked to the beaches, despite the availability of nearby parking. The fines, which range from £50 to £75, were a response to illegal parking on cycle paths and pavements. The council is now seeking permission from the Department for Transport (DfT) to double these fines after a successful trial last summer, although the DfT has yet to respond. The heatwave, with temperatures soaring to 35.1C in Kew Gardens, has led to increased beach attendance but also tragic incidents, including several drownings of teenagers across the UK. Additionally, transport services have been disrupted due to the severe weather, with speed restrictions imposed on trains to prevent track buckling. The council also noted that over 2,000 tonnes of waste are typically left on the beaches each summer, highlighting ongoing challenges in managing tourist influxes.
