A recent case in 2024 highlighted this issue when a 35-year-old woman lost ₹90,000 (roughly $1,200 USD) to a scammer posing as a property agent. Investigations revealed that the scammer, a marketing executive from Kalyan, Maharashtra, fabricated listings and used stolen photos to lure victims. The Maharashtra cyber police have since advised citizens to be cautious and verify property details through official land record websites. Common scams include token amount schemes, cloned listings, and impersonation tactics, where fraudsters create a sense of urgency to pressure victims into making quick decisions. To protect oneself, it is crucial to physically visit properties, verify ownership documents, and avoid making any advance payments without proper checks. If victimized, individuals should report the incident to the national cybercrime helpline and local authorities.
