On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court granted an interim stay on a directive from the Election Commission's Police Observer, which had classified certain citizens as 'troublemakers' ahead of upcoming elections in West Bengal. The court expressed a 'prima facie' view that the Police Observer had made an error in issuing a blanket directive aimed at nearly 800 members of the Trinamool Congress party, who were reportedly identified for their alleged involvement in voter intimidation and electoral disturbances. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in response to fears of mass arrests following this directive. While the court has reserved its order, it clarified that authorities retain the right to detain individuals in accordance with existing detention laws.
