On Monday, the Supreme Court of India confirmed the Madras High Court's order to transfer the investigation into alleged irregularities in transformer tenders to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The case involves ten tenders issued by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) between 2021 and 2023, valued at nearly ₹1,183 crores. The High Court had expressed concerns regarding the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption's (DVAC) handling of the inquiry, noting a lack of fairness and credibility in their investigation. It criticized the DVAC for not registering a First Information Report (FIR) despite receiving detailed complaints and for limiting the probe to a single official, while multiple individuals were implicated. The Supreme Court's decision allows the CBI to proceed with an independent investigation, ensuring that it is not influenced by any prior observations made by the High Court. TANGEDCO had initially filed an appeal but later withdrew it, leading to the dismissal of the case by the Supreme Court.
