In the wake of the recent West Bengal elections, helmet sales have surged dramatically as enforcement of helmet laws has intensified. Studds Accessories, one of India's leading helmet manufacturers, reported a remarkable 70% increase in sales volume in May 2023, with children's helmet sales more than doubling. This surge is attributed to stricter law enforcement following the elections, where police issued over 35,600 prosecutions for helmet violations in Kolkata alone. The demand is particularly strong in smaller towns and semi-urban areas, where helmet use was previously low. The new BJP government has made traffic safety a priority, instructing police to rigorously enforce helmet laws, with some districts even deploying officers dressed as 'Yama', the Hindu God of death, to emphasize safety. This shift in compliance is seen not only among individual riders but also within families, as evidenced by the rising sales of children's helmets across various regions, including Tier II cities like Murshidabad and Siliguri.
