The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has filed a petition in the Supreme Court against a Delhi High Court decision permitting wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games. The WFI argues that Vinesh is ineligible due to previous retirement and doping regulations.
- 01The WFI claims the Delhi High Court's order is 'ex facie illegal' and did not allow adequate opportunity for response.
- 02Vinesh Phogat voluntarily retired in December 2024, impacting her eligibility according to anti-doping rules.
- 03A missed doping test was recorded against Vinesh on May 4, 2025, leading to a pending disciplinary process.
- 04The WFI argues that selections should be based solely on merit and performance, not special exemptions.
- 05The deadline for accreditation for the Asian Games had already passed before the High Court's ruling.

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has challenged a Delhi High Court ruling that allowed Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat to participate in the selection trials for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games in New Delhi. In its Special Leave Petition (SLP) to the Supreme Court, the WFI described the High Court's order as 'ex facie illegal', claiming it did not provide the federation sufficient opportunity to respond. The WFI contends that Vinesh is ineligible under the selection criteria due to her voluntary retirement in December 2024 and a missed doping test recorded on May 4, 2025. According to the WFI, athletes returning from retirement must complete a mandatory six-month dope-testing period. The federation also highlighted that the selection process should remain under the jurisdiction of recognized sports federations, warning against judicial overreach. Additionally, they noted that the selection policy does not allow for exemptions based on an athlete's status or maternity. The WFI asserts that 12 wrestlers have already qualified for the trials based on their performance in previous championships, and the deadline for accreditation for the Asian Games had expired before the High Court's ruling took effect.
